Atalanta Fugiens, 1618

Michael Maier's book of fifty emblems, printed at Oppenheim in 1618 by Hieronymus Galler for Johann Theodor de Bry, the engravings attributed to Matthaus Merian. Each emblem carries a motto, a six-line epigram and a discourse of a page or two in which Maier explains his own picture, which makes it the one book in this archive where every image arrives with its maker's own reading.
