The True Masonic Chart, 1819
Jeremy Ladd Cross's Hieroglyphic Monitor, first published at New Haven in 1819 with emblem plates engraved by Amos Doolittle, the source of most American masonic emblem imagery for a century. It is a chart with its own lecture: the monitor printed alongside the plates walks through every emblem in order and says what it stands for, which is what makes it an archive of pictures made to be read. The copy is the Library of Congress's printing of 1826.
